temple site is particularly interesting as it has the largest and heaviest

UNESCO's Hal Saflieni "Hypogeum", this unique underground temple dates back
to circa.3000BC
and is located on three different levels, hewn out of the rock and it is
estimated that 7000 inhumations where carried out. The most impressive part
of the temple is the "Holy of Holies". One of the prehistoric masterpieces
is the "Sleeping Lady" which was found here. Our tour ends here and we

Mdina Medieval &
Central Highlights
Our tour today features the central part of the island. Our first
stop will include a visit to Mosta Doma, the church’s dome is one of the
largest unsupported domes in the World and is also famous for the Word War
II bomb which was dropped on the dome, piercing it and falling into the
church during a service, miraculously it did not explode! We next stop at
one of the most unique places of interest in Malta. The medieval city of Mdina,
which is otherwise known as "The Silent City". Mdina is the islands old
capital, built in the 9th century by the Arabs.
This medieval city is a maze of narrow
streets, quaint alleys and magnificent architecture. Our walking tour of
the city includes all the main highlights and also a visit to St. Paul's
Cathedral. Surrounding Mdina is the Roman town of Rabat which
can claim the origins of Maltese Christianity.
It was here in AD60 that the Apostle St Paul is said to have stayed after
being shipwrecked just off the coast. It is worthwhile visiting St. Paul's
Grotto which is said to be the resting place of St. Paul during his short
stay. Also worthwhile visiting is the Roman Domus. In 1881 remains of a
Roman townhouse where discovered on this site. There are some excellent
exhibits and the museum houses the principle remains of Malta’s Roman
period. Our tour ends here and we will return to our hotel. |
